CHAPTER 15

The pain began to subside, leaving behind a numbness as she lay against the soft cushions of the couch.

“What’s happened?” Marcus asked as he entered.

“I–I–I don’t know…she…collapsed. She was talking, and stopped, then she seemed to have trouble breathing.”

Marcus pushed past Jack to take Cate’s hand and assess her pulse. “Catherine? Have you had a vision?”

“Yes,” she squeaked out.

“All right. Just relax. How are you feeling?”

“Tired,” she answered. “But I didn’t pass out this time.”

He smiled at her as he tucked a lock of hair behind her ear. “Good. You’re getting better. Mother will be pleased.”

“I used her advice,” Cate answered as she tried to sit up.

“Not yet, dear. You’re still too tired. Would you prefer to rest in your bed?”

“No, I’m not sick,” she answered.

He stroked her hair. “But you must rest. The more you rest, the sooner you will recover your strength to use the compass to return home.”

With a sigh, she forced her head into a tiny nod. “Okay, fine. Just help me–“

Before she could finish her statement, he scooped her into his arms.

“I can walk,” she answered. “I’m moving a little.”

“What you can do and what you will do are separate things, Catherine.”

She tugged her lips into a slight smile. “Well, I know how you love to carry me around.”

“Yes, I do,” he said with raised eyebrows as he laid her on her bed. “I shall fetch Andrea to tend to you.”

“Thank you.”

Jack hovered at the foot of her bed. “I’ll wait with her.”

Marcus nodded at him before he left the room behind.

“Well, I’m making progress,” she said with a sigh. “Look, I’m moving and talking after one of my visions. After the worst one of those.”

“Want to talk about it or would you rather I prattle on about something else to take your mind off it?”

She focused her gaze on him. “I’d like to talk about it. Especially since I got a new detail this time.”

Jack’s eyebrows raised as he pulled an armchair closer to her bedside. “What was it? Maybe it’ll help us figure this out.”

Before Cate could explain, Andrea pushed into the room. “Your Grace, His Grace said you had a vision. How are you feeling?”

“Tired, but hopeful,” Cate answered.

Andrea smiled at her as she skirted the bed and eased onto the edge to take Cate’s hand. “That sounds wonderful.”

Cate bobbed her head. “Yes, as you can see, I’m making more progress on them not being so crippling.”

“And she has a new bit of information,” Jack added. “I’m waiting to hear it.”

“Oh, good, perhaps that will help us.”

“Tremendously, I think,” Cate said with a grin. “It’s a detail that has clarified everything, though it has also made some things less clear.”

“As always with these visions, Your Grace,” Andrea said.

Cate knitted her brows. “Yes. As always.”

“What was the detail?” Jack asked.

“Well, I had the usual vision. Terror striking at my heart as I run through the halls of Dunhaven. I rounded the corner and ran toward the double doors. This time I reached them.
